Volvo Trucks has announced the launch of a new heavy-duty electric truck, set to be available in the second half of 2025. The updated FH Electric model will feature an impressive range of up to 600 kilometers on a single charge, a significant enhancement from previous versions. Volvo first introduced its heavy-duty electric trucks in 2020, with the initial lineup including models like the Volvo FH Electric, Volvo FM Electric, and Volvo FMX Electric. These early models had a range of up to 300 kilometers, contingent on battery specifications. The new model’s range represents a doubling in capacity, showcasing considerable progress in electric vehicle technology.

Innovative e-Axle Technology

The company attributes the impressive range expansion to its new “e-axle” driveline technology. This innovation allows for significantly increased battery capacity by creating additional space within the vehicle’s design. Other contributing factors include advances in battery efficiency, battery management systems, and overall powertrain efficiency.

Volvo is pursuing a three-path strategy to achieve fossil-free transport, focusing on battery electric, fuel cell electric, and combustion engines running on renewable fuels such as green hydrogen and hydrogenated vegetable oil. To date, the company has delivered 3,800 electric trucks across 46 countries. This aligns with Volvo Group’s ambition to reach net-zero value chain emissions by 2040 and ensure all products delivered after that date have net-zero emissions.

Company’s Commitment to Sustainability

Volvo Trucks President Roger Alm expressed enthusiasm about the new electric truck’s capabilities, stating:

“Our new electric flagship will be a great complement to our wide range of electric trucks and enable zero-exhaust emission transport also for the longer distances. It will be a great solution for transport companies with a high annual mileage on their trucks and with a strong commitment to reduce CO2.”

Compared to previous years, this announcement marks a substantial shift in Volvo’s electric vehicle offerings. The 2020 models had relatively limited range, making them suitable primarily for shorter, urban routes. With the new model’s extended range, Volvo is positioning itself to meet the needs of companies that require robust, long-haul capabilities. This development comes amid growing industry-wide efforts to decarbonize the transport sector and meet stringent environmental targets.

The introduction of the new FH Electric model by Volvo represents a significant leap forward in the electric trucking industry. With its enhanced range, the truck can cater to a broader range of logistical needs, particularly those involving long-distance travel. This new offering aligns well with the company’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions and underscores its commitment to sustainability and innovation. As the industry continues to evolve, advancements like these will be crucial in driving the transition towards a more sustainable transport sector.
