In today’s investment landscape, the attractiveness of gold as a safe asset is tested as its 2025 surge fades into memory. Despite this, the gold market presents intriguing dynamics for investors seeking both safety and income. The SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) continues to reflect such an attraction, allowing investors to trade gold in brokerage accounts. However, this approach faces scrutiny during market stagnations as cost concerns come to the forefront, challenging its perceived utility.

Why is IAUI Gaining Traction? How Do These Investment Options Differ?

Recent reports illustrate a significant decline in the performance of SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) in the current year. By August 4, 2026, GLD had fallen 5.59% year-to-date. Over time, GLD has maintained its appeal by enabling trade of gold via shares. Nevertheless, its lack of dividends and the pressure of continued fees raise questions during extended periods without major gold price movements.

Why is IAUI Gaining Traction?

The NEOS Gold High Income ETF (IAUI) introduces an alternative by using an options-overlay strategy on gold. This approach allows it to achieve higher distribution rates, even when gold prices are stagnant. By applying a call-option strategy, IAUI converts potential price growth into immediate income. This innovation sees IAUI providing notable annual income, a feature especially appealing amidst a flat gold market.

How Do These Investment Options Differ?

GLD and IAUI serve distinct investment purposes, with the latter offering income through options while limiting potential upside gains. For example, in the past year, IAUI’s total return, including distributions, was 11.78%, while GLD’s return relied heavily on bullion price movements. These distinct strategies necessitate investors to consider their financial goals carefully.

On the topic of costs, IAUI’s expense ratio of 0.79% surpasses that of GLD’s 0.40%, and option premiums rely heavily on market volatility. Despite this, IAUI remains attractive by classifying some payouts as capital returns, potentially easing taxable income. Both options have varied tax implications, which are crucial to investor decisions, depending on the financial context.

“IAUI is steadily gaining favor, offering dependable income even when gold stays flat,” said an analyst.

“For those prioritizing hedging, IAUI may provide a suitable alternative,” a NEOS spokesperson stated.

As investors ponder the changing dynamics in gold investments, IAUI becomes a viable choice for those seeking income in a static gold market. The dual roles of these investment vehicles cater to different financial objectives. Holding IAUI in a tax-free environment allows for income generation, while maintaining GLD in tax-advantaged accounts helps avoid collectibles tax surcharges.
