Whirlpool Corporation has outlined a comprehensive plan to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions throughout its entire value chain by 2050. In announcing these goals, the home appliance giant aims to significantly reduce its environmental impact while continuing to innovate in product efficiency. In previous reports, Whirlpool concentrated more on short-term strategies, focusing primarily on reducing emissions linked to product usage. A notable plan last year emphasized reducing energy consumption of key products rather than the entire value chain. What are Whirlpool’s New Climate Targets?
Whirlpool’s updated emissions reduction goals, which have received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative, include a target to decrease operational Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 65% by 2030. Additionally, by 2030, the company aims to reduce Scope 3 emissions from sold products by 25%. Strategies include increasing the use of renewable energy and strengthening supplier partnerships. The corporation has already achieved reductions in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 57% since 2021, reflecting progress toward its 2030 goals. By expanding these efforts, the firm aims to cut key Scope 3 emissions, mainly those from sold product usage, by 90% by mid-century.
