Exploring new pathways to reduce coal dependency, Rio Tinto steps forward in its sustainability goals by integrating renewable solutions. The mining giant collaborates with SuperChar, focusing on bio pellets to substitute coal in alumina operations. This initiative, set to begin in 2028, highlights Rio Tinto’s strategic approach towards greener production processes.
Rio Tinto has long been engaged in reducing its environmental impact. The partnership with SuperChar is a significant addition to its numerous initiatives aimed at achieving a 50% reduction in operational emissions by 2030. Rio Tinto continuously explores pathways such as renewable energy and emissions reduction to progress towards its net-zero emissions target by 2050.
Why Bio Pellets?
The integration of bio pellets is seen as a practical solution by Rio Tinto to curb its fossil fuel dependence. Bio pellets, derived from rapidly renewable biomass, offer a viable alternative to coal. Initially, operational trials showcased the potential of these pellets, indicating they could potentially replace up to 30% of coal used in steam generation processes. This forms an essential milestone in the journey towards cleaner refining methods at Rio Tinto’s alumina operations.
How Will It Be Implemented?
Upon the commencement of deliveries in 2028, Rio Tinto will introduce bio pellets gradually, starting with a modest 5% composition in the blend, increasing to a possible 50%. The operation will initially kick off at the Yarwun refinery, following with expansion at the Queensland Alumina facility. The systematic rollout will be contingent on necessary approvals and site readiness.
SuperChar, specializing in plant-based charcoal, emerges as a key player in this endeavor. With the aim to replace traditional charcoal, SuperChar’s innovation lies in turning Bana grass, a sustainable feedstock, into bio pellets. The bio pellet production facility in Gladstone is designed to support local agriculture while contributing to regional economic growth.
Armando Torres of Rio Tinto expressed,
“Reducing our alumina refineries’ reliance on fossil fuel will require a mix of technologies, innovation and partnerships, and bio pellets are one of the practical options we are exploring as part of that.”
His statement reflects Rio Tinto’s commitment to harnessing diverse technologies, partnerships, and studying bio pellets as a practical alternative fuel.
The agreement with SuperChar is a step toward integrating bio pellets on a large scale. Should the project find success, it could substantially decrease Scope 1 emissions by up to 90,000 tons of CO2 annually. Executive Chairman of SuperChar, Michael Palmer, noted,
“This agreement builds on several years of collaboration and demonstrates the potential for local, regeneratively grown biomass as an alternative industrial fuel, while creating opportunities for regional communities.”
Bio pellets represent a potential key lever in the ongoing global effort to reduce reliance on non-renewable fuels. The partnership marks a shift towards sustainable alternatives in industrial operations and highlights the role of collaboration between corporates and innovators.
