Rio Tinto and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Web Services (AWS) have formed a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing sustainable copper production through the use of Rio Tinto’s Nuton technology. This collaboration will harness the power of AWS’s advanced cloud technologies while integrating Rio Tinto’s innovative approach to producing copper. The synergy between Rio Tinto’s bio-heap leaching method and AWS’s digital prowess presents an opportunity to reduce environmental impact and improve efficiency in copper extraction.
Previously, Rio Tinto focused heavily on understanding how to maximize copper yields from challenging mineral resources, which had been too costly and technically demanding to process. The introduction of Nuton technology has made it feasible to produce high-purity copper cathode by utilizing biological leaching processes. The first large-scale deployment of Nuton occurred in December 2025 at Gunnison Copper’s Johnson Camp, marking a swift transition from concept to application.
