AI Enters the Physical World with NvidiaWhat Scale of Compute Does AMD Advocate?

At the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, top executives from Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) and AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) presented differing visions for the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI). Nvidia’s approach emphasized AI’s integration into the physical world, while AMD highlighted the critical role of computational capability. The event underscored the contrasting strategies of two leading silicon companies, each aiming to capture the next phase of AI advancement. While Huang of Nvidia emphasized a future of physical AI driven by comprehensive systems, Su of AMD argued for scalable compute to handle growing AI demands.

Historically, Nvidia has been at the forefront of GPU development, which has been instrumental in AI advancements. Over time, the company transitioned from focusing solely on gaming to embracing AI platforms. Conversely, AMD has traditionally prioritized flexible solutions for a variety of computing needs. This focus has intensified as AI systems have demanded more versatile infrastructure. The different trajectories of these companies reflect their distinct strategic focuses but share a common goal of leading in AI innovation.

AI Enters the Physical World with Nvidia

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang proposed the concept that AI is transcending beyond software models confined to data centers, advocating for AI that can now interact with physical environments. Such a shift was marked as a significant transformation rather than a mere progression. By formulating AI as a factory entity, Nvidia positions its components as part of an integrated system capable of industrial-scale intelligence production.

“The ChatGPT moment for physical AI is here,” declared Huang, outlining Nvidia’s vision for real-world AI integration.

Huang has invested heavily in technologies like robotics and autonomous vehicles to illustrate Nvidia’s approach. He claimed that AI systems trained through simulation can effectively manage complex real-world problems, emphasizing Nvidia’s focus on creating complete AI production frameworks rather than piecemeal assembly.

What Scale of Compute Does AMD Advocate?

AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, explored the necessary computational power for projected AI advancements, suggesting a move toward unprecedented scales of processing. As AI workloads increase, Su pointed out that existing high-performance computing might soon fall short, demanding infrastructure that leverages advanced processing units and adaptive silicon.

Su passionately asked, “How many of you know what a yottaflop is?” referring to future requirements for AI systems.

The demand for yottaflop computing signifies a drastic leap from current technology capabilities. Su cited AMD’s range of modular solutions that can be adapted across multiple platforms, positing AMD’s offerings as the building blocks for future AI infrastructure, in contrast to Nvidia’s integrated approach.

An ongoing challenge for the industry is energy consumption as AI systems become more ubiquitous. Su stressed that efficient energy use will be vital in facilitating AI’s expansion, especially as more processing occurs near the data source, where constraints are often stricter.

Despite differing strategies, both executives agree on the necessity of decentralizing AI to positions closer to data generation. The insights from CES 2026 highlight that AI’s progression will leverage both comprehensive systems and flexible infrastructure, demanding innovation from both hardware and software perspectives.

Nvidia and AMD provide distinct yet interrelated perspectives on AI’s evolution. Nvidia’s focus on integrated systems complements AMD’s emphasis on computational scalability, suggesting a multi-faceted approach where diverse technologies converge. Future developments in AI will likely draw from these varied strategies, emphasizing the importance of collaboration across different domains of technology.
