How Will the Initiative Be Rolled Out?What Impact Will This Have on Emissions?

IKEA, in collaboration with Daimler Truck Italia and LC3 Trasporti, is making strides in sustainable logistics through a newly announced initiative. The project will focus on decarbonizing road transport in Italy with the use of electric trucks. By embracing this transition, the companies aim to not only cut emissions but also set a precedent in environmentally sustainable transportation practices.

In earlier logistical efforts, IKEA has been exploring alternative transportation solutions such as biogas and hybrid vehicles. This collaboration marks a clear shift towards full electrification, showcasing both innovation and the industry’s confidence in electric technology as a viable alternative. It reflects the broader push within the sector to embrace sustainable solutions in response to mounting environmental concerns.

How Will the Initiative Be Rolled Out?

The venture will initially introduce two Battery Electric Vehicles, expanding to a fleet of over ten Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 models by the third quarter of 2026. These vehicles will manage transportation services across key routes, namely between the ports of Genoa and La Spezia, and IKEA’s deliveries. Maurizio Pompei, CEO of Daimler Truck Italia, emphasized the strategic alignment of this project with their sustainability goals:

“The Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 is the result of years of development aimed at radically transforming road freight transport. Seeing it enter service in a project of this scale, alongside two forward-thinking companies such as LC3 and IKEA, confirms that the energy transition is already happening. This is a virtuous example of how technological innovation can align seamlessly with environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.”

What Impact Will This Have on Emissions?

Once fully operational, the program is expected to facilitate over 1.2 million kilometers of zero-emissions travel annually. According to IKEA, this effort will eliminate CO₂ emissions linked to these transport operations. Furthermore, the project will diminish the climate impact of road freight within Italy, aligning with IKEA’s broader sustainability agenda.

“This is an ambitious project aimed at significantly reducing our transportation climate footprint in Italy. Thanks to this new triangle partnership, we’re able to define the optimal setup together and deliver a solution that reduces total costs while also contributing to a cleaner and quieter environment, which is an essential part of our mission to create a better everyday life,”

stated Ewelina Taylor, Global Transport Manager at Inter IKEA Group.

Inter IKEA Group connects franchisees with suppliers and oversees the strategic alignment of IKEA’s global direction. This new initiative forms part of their ongoing commitment to reducing environmental burdens across their supply chains.

Through this collaboration, the participating entities aim to merge technological innovation with tangible environmental benefits. By investing in electric transportation, they seek to set a standard within the logistics industry while also addressing the pressing requirement for lower emissions.

This collaboration signifies meaningful progress in the evolution of supply chain logistics. It signals the importance of partnerships in achieving significant environmental outcomes while maintaining economic viability. As sustainability becomes a central focus across industries, projects like these highlight the potential for industry leaders to spearhead change.

IKEA’s initiative in Italy could pave the way for similar projects elsewhere, as companies look to balance growth with responsibility. Electric trucks represent one path forward, advocating for a reduced carbon footprint without compromising operational efficiency. As such developments unfold, they offer a glimpse into future possibilities for other sectors hoping to follow suit.
