A recent revelation about the UK-based PR entity, Movchan Agency, has stirred the communications and journalism sectors. The agency had been employing fictitious PR personas, including invented names, email addresses, and even AI-generated photographs, to engage with journalists. This practice has raised questions about ethical boundaries and the authenticity of media interactions. Relationships between journalists and PR professionals are typically founded on trust, making this disclosure particularly disconcerting for many in the industry.

What Prompted the Creation of Fake Identities? How Has This Affected Journalists?

In contrast to previous practices where PR firms focused on genuine interactions, Movchan’s use of fabricated identities has marked a significant deviation. Traditionally, PR agencies have been seen as essential conduits for company information, facilitating news through transparent and legitimate channels. While using AI to enhance capabilities in PR is not new, the fabrication of identities without consent has been widely criticized. This shift illustrates the challenges posed by rapidly advancing AI tools and their impact on media dynamics.

What Prompted the Creation of Fake Identities?

Founder Nadya Movchan explained that their actions stemmed from issues with Gmail’s deliverability updates, which compromised their domain’s reputation.

“A few months ago (likely after one of Gmail’s deliverability updates), we had a major issue with our domain reputation. While we started working on the recovery, we decided to purchase pre-warmed domains, so as not to halt outreach, as a temporary measure. They came with pre-warmed mailboxes with set names and pictures from the vendor.”

How Has This Affected Journalists?

Journalists discovered emails dating back to 2025 in their inboxes, suggesting that Movchan’s tactics weren’t recent developments. This long-standing practice has clouded judgments on the credibility of pitches. Some journalists, like Ellen Chang, reported instances of misleading orchestrations where fake personas falsely represented their interests.

“I even caught one of them last Oct. claiming I wanted to meet a founder who attended Money2020 but asked to meet in LA when the conf. is in Vegas.”

These recent revelations appear to be part of a broader industry trend noted by Dimitri Masin of Gradient Labs. He estimates a high percentage of unsolicited communications coming from invented sources, indicating a rising issue within digital communications.

Masin highlighted the worrying prevalence of such fabricated interactions, noting the normalisation of AI-driven outreach. This perspective underscores a wider industry challenge where synthetic interaction threatens authentic journalist-PR engagements.

Movchan’s approach mirrors earlier instances involving Hedonova, where fictional entities and misleading narratives were used for financial gains. The use of AI-generated personas, though technologically advanced, brings ethical considerations to the fore.

In response to criticism, Movchan plans to end these practices. Yet, AI’s growing role in PR poses significant ethical dilemmas. The reliance on automation and synthetic identities, if unchecked, could further challenge trust-dependent industries. The integrity of PR and journalistic fields relies on maintaining transparent interactions, with real connections still holding paramount importance.
