Food delivery service DoorDash has taken a new step by launching Zesty, a mobile app powered by AI, designed not for food delivery, but for discovering dining options. Unlike many apps offering traditional search interfaces, Zesty leverages conversational artificial intelligence complemented by social signals, thus providing users with tailored dining recommendations directly. The app is currently in the public beta phase, available in New York and the San Francisco Bay Area, reflecting DoorDash’s strategic shift from logistics to discovery in the culinary world.
DoorDash has previously focused on optimizing food delivery and logistics. However, the launch of Zesty shows a significant shift towards becoming a discovery platform as well. Comparable services like Yelp combine user reviews with location data, while newer platforms such as Beli have placed emphasis on social interactions for discovery. Zesty stands out by integrating conversational AI and social signals to enhance user experience, providing more curated and personalized suggestions.
How Does Zesty Enhance Discovery?
Zesty marks a shift from conventional restaurant searching by using AI to interpret user queries and deliver options without sifting through extensive reviews or ratings. The app encourages users to input descriptive requests like “a quiet dinner spot for introverts in Williamsburg,” delivering suggestions that fit the bill. This AI-driven approach draws on the trend among consumers who favor personalized, outcome-based interactions over generic search results.
Can Zesty Offer a Unique User Experience?
The app also integrates social and community signals, allowing users to share experiences and interact with others who have similar preferences. This relies not on static ratings but on dynamic social content to drive restaurant discovery. DoorDash’s experience in accumulating consumer taste data gives it an edge in creating a more personalized user experience. However, questions remain about whether these features will significantly alter consumer habits or simply repackage existing data.
“Zesty is designed to help users connect with the best of their communities,” said Andy Fang, Co-Founder of DoorDash, emphasizing the app’s goal to foster community-driven discovery.
Despite being a standalone app, Zesty could eventually incorporate booking features to potentially connect its vast network of users more directly to dining spaces, aligning with DoorDash’s expansive commerce strategy.
As a standalone platform, Zesty does not currently support reservations or bookings, differentiating it from apps like OpenTable or Resy. By acting independently of DoorDash’s main app, Zesty tests the waters of its discovery-driven approach. Adding booking functionalities might be a logical future step as it complements the app’s current features.
DoorDash’s venture into discovery platforms with Zesty is part of its broader strategy to expand beyond traditional delivery services. Earlier, DoorDash launched a product named Going Out, which assists in planning dining experiences, hinting at a comprehensive local commerce model. Insights into consumer behavior, such as preference for prompt, customized responses over traditional searches, further shape this endeavor.
