DHL Global Forwarding, a major entity in the logistics industry, has embarked on an initiative to address environmental concerns with its new GoGreen Plus Portfolio. This move aims to provide shippers with options that not only offset emissions but also actively reduce them using innovative approaches. Through GoGreen Plus, DHL Global Forwarding seeks to facilitate significant emission reductions in logistics without imposing high costs or complex processes on businesses.
Before this announcement, DHL had already been integrating climate-neutral shipping solutions via its GoGreen service. This previous solution allowed shippers to offset emissions by investing in climate protection projects recognized internationally. Now, with the launch of GoGreen Plus, the focus is on carbon “insetting.” This approach involves replacing traditional fossil fuels with sustainable alternatives, like Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), utilizing a book-and-claim strategy. This new effort marks a significant shift from the company’s past environmental initiatives.
What Does the GoGreen Plus Portfolio Offer?
The GoGreen Plus Portfolio features several offerings intended to cater to varying needs of DHL’s clientele. At its core is the GoGreen Plus Base, which guarantees a 10% emissions reduction for eligible shipments, irrespective of market or shipment type, provided at a standard flat rate. This flexibility and scalability make it accessible to businesses of varying sizes. Kathrin Brost from DHL Global Forwarding highlighted the inclusiveness of this service.
You don’t need to invest millions to make a difference. Any business can start small, with just a few extra Euros per shipment and without additional effort.
How Will This Impact Sustainability in Supply Chains?
The introduction of these new services is likely to influence sustainability efforts in global supply chains positively. With demand for emission-reduced services steadily increasing, DHL’s portfolio responds to a critical market need. Apart from the Base service, there are also advanced solutions: GoGreen Plus Premium, offering an 85% emissions reduction consistent with book & claim solutions, and GoGreen Plus Select, tailored for large customers needing customization in their decarbonization efforts.
DHL Global Forwarding’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond these new products. Part of a broader strategy initiated in 2021, the company aims for net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and targets using 30% sustainable fuels by 2030. As Amanda Rasmussen, DHL’s Chief Commercial Officer, remarked,
We are proud to introduce solutions that truly change what customers can expect from emission reduced logistics.
This aligns with the company’s previous commitment to advancing sustainable practices in logistics.
Overall, these initiatives may influence the logistics industry significantly, offering a scalable solution for companies seeking to reduce carbon footprints while controlling costs. With evolving global priorities towards sustainability, logistics providers like DHL play a crucial role in setting viable pathways for eco-friendly business practices.
