ClearSpace has been involved in similar projects in the past, such as the feasibility study for in-orbit satellite refuelling missions with the UK Space Agency. These previous initiatives have laid the groundwork for the current CLEAR mission, demonstrating the company’s consistent progress in the field of in-orbit servicing. The company’s ongoing efforts to improve technology readiness and ensure the mission’s success reflect its commitment to sustainable space practices. Moreover, ClearSpace has previously raised significant funds to support its innovative projects, showcasing its ability to attract investment and trust from stakeholders.

UK Space Agency’s Strategic Vision

The UK Space Agency is focused on enhancing the mission’s design and capabilities to ensure the UK’s Active Debris Removal solutions are both reliable and deployable in the future.

According to Rory Holmes, Managing Director of ClearSpace UK, the support and collaboration with the UK Space Agency highlight their technical excellence and dedication to safer space environments. This partnership aims to significantly reduce debris in orbit, making space operations more efficient and secure.

Objectives of the CLEAR Mission

The CLEAR mission will concentrate on removing two derelict objects from low Earth orbit, thereby reducing collision risks for other satellites. The mission involves capturing, transporting, and safely disposing of space debris by burning it up in the Earth’s atmosphere. Paul Bate, CEO of the UK Space Agency, emphasizes the importance of developing methods to remove space debris amidst a record number of satellite launches, indicating the pressing need for the mission.

ClearSpace has been advancing in-orbit services since its founding in 2018 by Luc Piguet and Muriel Richard-Noca. The company’s mission extends beyond debris removal, encompassing technologies for in-orbit transport, mission extension, and recycling. By fostering a circular economy in space, ClearSpace aims to ensure sustainable operations for the future. This holistic approach reflects the company’s vision of transforming space activities into a more environmentally friendly domain.

The collaboration between ClearSpace and the UK Space Agency marks a significant step toward addressing the escalating issue of space debris. With the ongoing development of the CLEAR mission, ClearSpace continues to demonstrate its capability in providing innovative solutions for sustainable space operations. As the company progresses, it sets a precedent for the effective management of space resources, prioritizing safety and sustainability in its mission objectives.
