Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has taken a significant step forward in its logistics capabilities by acquiring the Swiss-based company RIVR, known for developing advanced delivery robots. The acquisition signals Amazon’s continued focus on expanding its automation and robotics capabilities to improve efficiency and safety in last-mile deliveries. The deal, confirmed by both RIVR and Amazon, integrates RIVR’s innovative wheeled-legged robots into Amazon’s logistics operations. How Will Amazon Utilize RIVR’s Technology?

The acquisition of RIVR equips Amazon with sophisticated robotic solutions to enhance their last-mile delivery framework. RIVR’s robots, which operate on a combination of physical artificial intelligence and wheeled-legged mobility, are designed to navigate challenging urban environments. This technological integration aims to streamline doorstep deliveries, making operations more efficient. An Amazon spokesperson highlighted the acquisition as part of their commitment to safety and innovation in delivery methods. Despite the absence of a formal announcement, the deal was confirmed by multiple sources, reflecting Amazon’s strategic incorporation of cutting-edge technology to overcome logistical hurdles.

What Does RIVR’s Acquisition Mean for the Industry?

The acquisition underscores a significant industry shift towards automated delivery solutions. As ecommerce continues to grow exponentially, the complexity of the logistics chain, particularly the last mile, necessitates robust and adaptable solutions. RIVR’s focus aligns with the demands of smart cities and infrastructure security, essential components in the evolving landscape of urban logistics. With an early focus on pilot deployments among key consumers and sectors, RIVR’s robotics and AI innovations have positioned them as a valuable asset within the industry. This acquisition may prompt other tech and retail giants to invest more heavily in robotics as they seek to enhance their delivery operations.

RIVR, formerly Swiss-Mile, had already made waves in the robotics sector shortly after its incorporation in 2023. A year later, it secured $22 million in seed funding, attracting notable investors such as Amazon’s Industrial Innovation Fund and Bezos Expeditions. This established a precedent for the current acquisition, as Amazon capitalized on their earlier investment and recognized RIVR’s potential to address logistical challenges.

Marko Bjelonic, RIVR’s CEO and Co-Founder, expressed optimism about joining forces with Amazon.

“This step will accelerate our vision of building General Physical AI through doorstep delivery,”

he stated, acknowledging the role of robotics and AI in achieving widespread real-world applications. Despite Bjelonic’s pride in RIVR’s achievements to date, he is enthusiastic about future collaborations with Amazon.

“I’m incredibly proud of what RIVR built, and even more excited about what we will accomplish next at Amazon.”

In 2025, before its acquisition, RIVR shifted its brand focus and started collaborating with logistics companies for delivery robot field testing. This strategic rebrand and alliance illustrated the company’s aim to redefine last-mile delivery solutions. By launching their innovative robots in partnership with Veho within the United States, RIVR demonstrated the viability and adaptability of their technology across diverse urban landscapes.

Amazon’s acquisition of RIVR represents a sustained commitment to innovation in logistics through robotics. Insight drawn from Amazon’s past investments in RIVR indicates a strategic alignment aimed at navigating the demands of contemporary urban logistics. The introduction of robotic solutions in last-mile delivery could set a new industry standard as ecommerce and urban living dynamics continue to evolve. This development may inspire further adoption of robotics in supply chain processes, enhancing efficiency, safety, and customer satisfaction.
