The May Agentic AI Report by PYMNTS Intelligence highlighted notable increases in AI’s role across various sectors. Activities such as finding deals, managing household tasks, and meal planning saw significant growth in AI utilization between October and March. However, as embedded AI in merchant apps grows familiar, its perceived usefulness appears to decline in consumers’ eyes.

How Are Platforms Filling the Gap?

This perceived usefulness gap is where dedicated AI platforms have come into play. Providing extensive capabilities in categories like health, planning, and finance, these platforms gained ground where embedded AI saw declines. Such platforms allow for exploration and comparison, meeting consumers’ needs for a broader service spectrum.

“Dedicated platforms offer the breadth that consumers need for informed decision-making,”

the report explains.

Embedded AI tools, being limited in scope by design, do not present the same advantages. These restrictions impact the way consumers perceive and trust these services, potentially leading to a decrease in use. Consequently, payments and commerce companies face the necessity of reevaluating how AI is implemented within their offerings.

The implications for businesses are clear: simply incorporating AI into digital interfaces does not equate to consumer satisfaction or necessitate usage. Companies must recognize the preference for platforms providing substantial value through comprehensive services.

“It is essential to bridge the gap between user expectations and AI capabilities effectively,”

said a spokesperson from a leading AI platform.

The dynamics in consumer AI adoption underscore the critical need for businesses to adapt their strategies towards solutions that prioritize consumer experience.
