Eight years ago, similar technologies were in their infancy stages with limited applications. Today, the conversation has shifted toward integration with AI for diagnostic capabilities, aligning with global digital transformation trends. Previously, the focus was more on feasibility and less on scalability. Recent advancements have underscored the potential of automated inspection systems as essential to future industrial practices.

How Does Voliro Plan to Enhance Robotics?

The new funding allows Voliro to enhance its T platform, which features cloud integration and AI-driven inspection diagnostics. With a focus on building modular payloads, the company aims to revolutionize infrastructure maintenance. Voliro’s aerial robots are poised to offer significant time and cost reductions, addressing workforce shortages in a sector that has traditionally relied heavily on manual inspection methods.

What Are the Challenges in Infrastructure Inspections?

Two-thirds of certified non-destructive testing professionals in the US are over 40, highlighting workforce difficulties in the industry. Traditional methods pose risks and limit the frequency of inspections, leading many to turn to automated solutions like those offered by Voliro. The company’s efforts aim to counteract the annual $2.5 trillion estimated costs from corrosion-related failures globally, showcasing the necessity for modern inspection systems.

Originating from ETH Zurich, Voliro has established itself through partnerships with industry giants like Chevron and Holcim. These collaborations demonstrate the application of its aerial robots in challenging industrial settings, emphasizing the potential benefits of robotics in enhancing safety and efficiency.

“Infrastructure is the backbone of modern civilization—and maintaining it is one of the great challenges of our time,” explains CEO Florian Gutzwiller. “We’re delivering on a vision: autonomous aerial robots leading industrial intelligence.”

The involvement of noa Ventures, a significant player in venture capital, underscores the increasing confidence in Voliro’s platform. Gregory Dewerpe, Founder at noa, noted,

“Large-scale industrial inspections are a massive opportunity for robotics and automation.”

This backing highlights the broad industry potential for automated solutions.

With €20.7M targeted for development, this funding phase emphasizes enhancing platform autonomy. The extended investment will promote novel functionalities, transitioning from passive observation to active interventions in industrial environments. This focus is a clear indicator of Voliro’s commitment to addressing resilience, climate concerns, and workforce challenges.

Voliro continues at the forefront of inspection robotics, characterized by innovative technological progress and strategic collaborations. As industry pains persist with aging infrastructure and workforce shortages, Voliro’s solutions could prove indispensable. The company’s ability to adapt and integrate current AI trends makes it pivotal in shaping the future of industrial inspections, indicating a promising path for both immediate and long-term industry needs.
