In Tallinn, Estonia, two prominent tech companies with Estonian roots, Starship Technologies and Bolt, have introduced a new delivery service that integrates autonomous robots into food delivery. The collaboration aims to enhance urban mobility by offering a sustainable and cost-effective solution through Bolt’s delivery platform. This new service provides an alternative to traditional delivery methods, allowing residents access to quick, eco-friendly deliveries with minimal environmental impact. Combining Starship’s advanced robotics technology with Bolt’s expanding delivery services reflects a shared vision for less congested urban areas.
Starship Technologies has been at the forefront of autonomous delivery, previously completing millions of successful robot deliveries. The company has been operational in various locations, steadily increasing its presence and performance. Bolt, renowned for its rapid growth in ride-hailing and food delivery, continues to innovate by incorporating robotic technology to advance its services. This partnership marks a significant step for both companies in their quest to redefine last-mile delivery solutions in Europe.
What Does This Collaboration Entail?
The new service allows Bolt customers in Tallinn to use the Bolt Food app for ordering groceries, now delivered by Starship’s autonomous robots. Over 180,000 residents can enjoy this delivery method from three designated Bolt Market stores. During the launch phase, these robot deliveries are provided at no cost to customers, encouraging widespread adoption and showcasing the capabilities of the service. This collaboration offers a blend of convenience and sustainability, supporting both companies’ objective of reducing urban traffic.
How Do the Robots Operate?
Starship’s robots are designed to navigate urban environments autonomously, having completed extensive deliveries globally. These electrically-powered machines are energy-efficient, consuming minimal energy per delivery. Operating at Level 4 autonomy, they make numerous crossings each day, demonstrating reliability and safety. This technological proficiency allows the robots to integrate seamlessly into Bolt’s delivery network, ensuring smooth operations and customer satisfaction.
Ahti Heinla, CEO of Starship Technologies, highlighted the partnership’s potential in offering sustainable delivery solutions:
“We’re thrilled to launch with Bolt today, bringing autonomous food delivery to even more customers in Tallinn. This collaboration is not just about convenience and greater choice; by integrating our robots into the Bolt Food app, we’re offering a sustainable, scalable last-mile delivery solution that reduces local traffic and emissions.”
Meanwhile, Jevgeni Kabanov, President of Bolt, emphasized the innovation brought by the collaboration:
“With the launch of Starship Technologies robot deliveries in Tallinn, we now provide a new delivery experience for Bolt Market customers. It’s a reflection of our shared roots with Starship in Estonian innovation, and we’re proud to bring that experience to power our Bolt Market grocery stores with innovative technology.”
This service launch event was held at Bolt’s headquarters, marking the official commencement of this innovative initiative. As the service rolls out, it combines cutting-edge technology with practical delivery applications, setting a precedent for future collaborations in the sector. By prioritizing sustainability and efficiency, both companies continue to lead in transforming urban delivery services. This partnership not only aligns with their strategic goals but also demonstrates their commitment to environmental responsibility and technological advancement.
