Brazil’s payment system Pix, developed by the Central Bank, is set to introduce a recurring payments feature in June 2025, aiming to modernize bill payments and expand its influence in the eCommerce sector. Known as Pix Automático, the feature will allow users to automate recurring expenses such as utility bills and subscription services, presenting promising opportunities for businesses and consumers alike. This move is expected to further cement Pix’s standing in Brazil’s financial ecosystem, where instant payments are already an integral part of the economy.

Pix was launched in late 2020 and has consistently demonstrated growth, processing over $338 billion in monthly transactions. Unlike its initial introduction, which focused on immediate transfers, Pix Automático will target a different payment niche by addressing recurring billing needs. Similar announcements in the past emphasized Pix’s ability to disrupt traditional banking processes, but this new addition pivots toward streamlining business operations and meeting consumer demand for convenience. Analysts anticipate its impact will largely benefit those without access to credit cards by providing an alternative automated payment solution.

How Will Pix Automático Simplify Payments?

Pix Automático’s design allows businesses to consolidate their partnerships for billing. Instead of coordinating with multiple banks for invoices and automatic debits, companies can rely on a single entity for these processes. According to Ebanx, a fintech firm adopting this feature early, this streamlined approach will reduce operational complexity. Ebanx Vice President Eduardo de Abreu highlighted its significance:

“Pix Automático should be really relevant,” he said, emphasizing its ability to digitize payment infrastructures for businesses.

This feature is projected to attract eCommerce payments totaling $30 billion within two years, largely driven by previously underserved consumers. As businesses incorporate this system, they can expect to see a reduction in payment friction and an improvement in subscription models, particularly for SaaS companies operating in Brazil.

What Benefits Will Businesses and Users Experience?

For companies, Pix Automático offers a more efficient way of managing recurring payments while potentially reducing costs. Ebanx has already rolled out technical documentation and a simulated API environment to help businesses integrate the feature, enabling them to test their systems before full adoption. Ebanx’s Chief Product and Technology Officer Fabio Scopeta explained:

“This solution streamlines billing processes and subscription payments, reduces friction, and enhances payment efficiency for users and businesses.”

Businesses aiming to improve customer retention and simplify billing procedures may find this feature especially beneficial. Meanwhile, consumers are expected to experience greater convenience and accessibility as they transition to automated payments, reducing dependence on traditional methods.

Industry observers recall Pix’s initial rollout as a milestone for digital payments in Brazil, emphasizing its ability to facilitate real-time transactions. However, the recurring payments feature represents a strategic shift toward broader financial inclusivity. While Pix previously catered to one-off payments, this latest development positions it as a versatile tool for both personal and corporate financial management.

As Pix Automático launches, its success will depend on widespread adoption by businesses and consumers. Its potential to drive $30 billion in transactions underscores its significance in Brazil’s digital economy. Individuals without access to traditional credit systems may particularly benefit, furthering economic inclusion. Businesses that rely on subscription models stand to streamline their operations and reduce inefficiencies, making the feature a potentially pivotal development in the region’s payments landscape.
