Living Carbon Revitalizes Abandoned Mine Lands

The current agreement commits Microsoft to purchase 1.4 million tonnes of carbon removal credits generated by reforestation projects developed by Living Carbon. These projects are implemented on 25,000 acres of degraded mine lands across the Appalachian region. The reforestation process is designed to restore soil quality and stabilize local ecosystems while creating carbon credits that contribute to Microsoft’s environmental targets.

Living Carbon, established in 2019, converts marginal lands into productive environmental assets by restoring abandoned mines, degraded farmlands, and unproductive soils.

“Restoring degraded mine lands offers one of the most scalable and meaningful opportunities for nature-based climate action in the United States. We’re proud to be working with Microsoft to advance high-quality reforestation and unlock the potential of some of the most challenging yet important lands in the U.S.—not only for carbon removal, but also for restoring ecosystems and supporting the return of these lands to productivity.”

These reforestation efforts not only capture carbon but also promote improved water quality, soil health, and biodiversity.

Microsoft continues to solidify its role in carbon removal by finalizing multiple large-scale deals. Its portfolio now includes agreements with Chestnut Carbon and re.green, alongside new bioenergy carbon capture and storage projects totaling over 10 million metric tons.

“We are pleased to support this project as part of Microsoft’s broader portfolio of high-quality carbon removal solutions. Uniquely targeted nature-based projects like this address systemic challenges while also generating positive climate and ecological outcomes.”

The agreement presents an opportunity to address environmental and economic issues simultaneously. It underscores the importance of practical measures to rehabilitate degraded lands and encourage sustainable growth in rural areas. Stakeholders from both companies emphasize measurable impacts and long-term benefits, marking a trend that intertwines corporate strategy with environmental stewardship.
