Hyundai has initiated a recall of more than 49,700 Santa Fe and Santa Fe HEV SUVs in the United States due to a potential issue that could impact airbag functionality. The recall affects 2024 model year vehicles, which may experience problems such as illumination of the airbag warning light, unintended airbag deployment, or failure to deploy during a collision. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has confirmed these issues are linked to the main floor wire harness, which is prone to damage from contact with the folding hinge assembly of the second-row passenger-side bench seat.
Issues with Hyundai vehicles have been reported previously, including recalls for airbag problems in different models. In past recalls, Hyundai faced criticism for delays in addressing these safety concerns. Comparatively, the current recall appears to be more preemptive, as there are no confirmed crashes or injuries associated with this defect. This proactive approach may reflect lessons learned from previous incidents, aiming to enhance customer safety and trust.
Details of the Recall
The recall report filed on July 26 by Hyundai with the NHTSA outlines the specific risks posed by the issue. The main floor wire harness in the affected SUVs can be damaged due to friction with the passenger-side, second-row bench seat’s folding hinge assembly. This damage could lead to crucial failures in airbag deployment systems. Hyundai has emphasized that the recall is a preventive measure to ensure customer safety.
“The main floor wire harness used in the subject vehicles could become damaged due to contact with the passenger-side, second-row bench seat’s folding hinge assembly,” the report explained.
Service and Reimbursement
Hyundai has committed to addressing the recall by offering free repairs to affected vehicle owners. Starting from September 23, Hyundai will notify owners with instructions to bring their vehicles to dealerships for inspection and replacement of damaged wire harnesses. This service will be provided at no cost, and the company will also reimburse any out-of-pocket expenses incurred by customers for previous repairs related to this issue.
“Additionally, Hyundai will provide owners of affected vehicles reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses incurred to obtain a remedy for the recall condition in accordance with the reimbursement plan submitted to NHTSA on February 22, 2024,” the report said.
Despite the recall, no incidents or injuries have been reported in the U.S. or Canada. This indicates that the problem was identified before any severe consequences occurred, reflecting the effectiveness of the recall process. Production of the recalled gas-powered Santa Fe SUVs took place from late December 2023 to mid-July 2024, while the Santa Fe HEVs were produced in a nearly 20-week span in 2024.
Hyundai prioritizes customer safety by proactively issuing recalls and providing free remedies. This approach not only prevents potential accidents but also helps maintain consumer trust. Regular vehicle maintenance and adhering to recall notices are crucial for vehicle owners to ensure their safety and optimal vehicle performance.
