How is eBay utilizing AI in its platform?
eBay has introduced AI tools that enhance productivity in multiple areas, including search, payments, and marketing. According to CEO Jamie Iannone, eBay’s proprietary LLMs were developed using extensive e-commerce data to optimize tasks efficiently.
“We leveraged our decades of eCommerce data to build our proprietary LLM models from scratch to accomplish specialized eCommerce tasks at greater levels of efficiency,” Iannone said.
What does the partnership with OpenAI mean for eBay?
Through a collaboration with OpenAI’s Operator, eBay aims to create a new channel for product discovery. Operator, an AI agent, assists users in browsing and retrieving information online, potentially increasing the exposure of eBay listings to a broader audience. Iannone noted that this initiative has the potential to expand the reach of sellers and provide buyers with greater access to unique inventory.
“This agentic approach to commerce could create an entirely new channel for discovery and shopping online,” Iannone said.
In addition to AI advancements, eBay has broadened its payment options. The company expanded Klarna’s buy now, pay later (BNPL) service to six additional European countries after its initial launch in Germany. Furthermore, a partnership with Riverty allows German buyers to pay via monthly invoices. These updates reflect eBay’s focus on increasing payment flexibility and optimizing transaction processes for users.
“In payments and financial services, we continue to focus on adding new and locally relevant ways to pay on eBay, to expand buyer choice, drive conversion and optimize our payment mix,” Iannone said.
eBay has also taken steps to strengthen its presence in the automotive sector by acquiring Caramel, an online automotive transaction provider. This acquisition aims to simplify vehicle transactions across all U.S. states while enhancing trust in the collectible car market. The company expects this move to benefit other product categories as well, considering that vehicle buyers often purchase related accessories and parts.
“We also expect an improved vehicle transaction experience to drive synergies within other categories as our average vehicle buyer also spends thousands of dollars annually on P&A [parts and accessories] and non-motor items across the eBay marketplace,” Iannone said.
