Airbus, Leonardo, and Thales are consolidating their space activities to bolster Europe’s strategic autonomy in the space sector. The collaboration, dubbed “Project Bromo,” aims to create a unified front and a competitive entity capable of standing out in the global space market. This move, seen as a response to the intense global competition, is expected to strengthen Europe’s influence over critical space capabilities crucial for various sectors, including telecommunications and national security. The planned new company, which mirrors the collaborative model of MBDA, a European missile manufacturer, symbolizes a renewed European commitment to space innovation and technological advancement.

What Does Project Bromo Entail?

Through Project Bromo, these leading aerospace companies aim to establish a firm capable of innovating and developing comprehensive solutions for space infrastructure. The focus will be on launching advanced technologies, sans spacecraft launchers, to enhance market innovation. The operation is projected to yield significant income with aims to reach a mid triple-digit million euros in operating income within a few years. This initiative envisions a unified structure with collaborative control, aiming to compete and expand in international markets.

Challenges Facing the Partnership?

The partnership will require navigating various governmental and regulatory challenges over the coming years. Negotiations with European governments, unions, and the European Commission are crucial steps, especially given regional industrial interests. Italian unions, in particular, have expressed the need for clearer insights into how the deal will enable the country’s industry to compete globally. Furthermore, opposition might come from smaller companies, like Germany’s OHB, which could feel disadvantaged by the collaboration’s scale and reach.

In past collaborations, European countries have had to address complex governance issues within multinational operations, often encountering conflicts due to leadership rotations and appointments driven by nationality, particularly within Airbus. However, the new coalition is committing not to repeat these mistakes by dismissing rotating leadership models. This unified entity, which anticipates operational readiness by 2027, underscores a significant evolution from previous decentralized operations toward a more cohesive European strategic presence in space.

“This proposed new company marks a pivotal milestone for Europe’s space industry,” remarked the leaders of Airbus, Leonardo, and Thales, highlighting their shared vision for a more competitive European space presence.

This sentiment captures the collaborative intent behind Project Bromo, aiming to harmonize expertise and resources across these major corporations for enhanced market execution and innovation. The integration process also stresses fostering unified governance while avoiding inherent pitfalls of past collaborations.

Thales continues to lead in Defence, Aerospace, and Cyber & Digital technologies, contributing over €4 billion annually in Research & Development, critical for technological sectors like AI and cloud technologies. Meanwhile, Leonardo, with its expansive global operations and involvement in significant international aerospace programs, brings additional strength and sectoral diversity to the partnership. Their collective contributions provide a robust foundation for Project Bromo.

Ultimately, this strategic collaboration resonates with European governmental aims to reinforce industrial and technological self-sufficiency in space. By aligning their resources and objectives, the triad envisions a path of accelerated innovation, market competitiveness, and sustained industrial growth. As this alliance unfolds, it positions Europe uniquely on the global stage while offering employees enhanced career prospects within an ambitious, cutting-edge sector.

“This partnership aligns with the ambitions of European governments to strengthen…,” the joint statement from the three companies reiterated, setting the stage for a phased transformational process within the industry.

This approach brings forward a collective momentum and a concerted drive towards establishing a fortified European space organization that aspires to meet and surpass global challenges.
