Copenhagen-based ABH Optics ApS, originating from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), has obtained €1M in pre-seed funding. This investment, spearheaded by High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), will further the development of the world’s thinnest and lightest eyeglass lenses. ABH Optics aims to enhance the comfort and aesthetics of high-prescription eyewear and promotes sustainability through reduced plastic usage.
ABH Optics’ innovative approach has attracted attention before, but this funding underlines its potential to disrupt the market. Similar ventures have shown promising, but limited, advancements in lens technology. By contrast, ABH Optics’ use of meta-optics and nanotechnology positions it to lead the sector. Previous attempts lacked the same level of customization and environmental considerations, highlighting the uniqueness of ABH Optics’ mission.
Investment Backing
The financing round led by HTGF marks a significant milestone for ABH Optics. Olaf Joeressen, Senior Investment Manager at HTGF, expressed excitement about supporting ABH Optics.
“We are excited to support ABH Optics in their journey to disrupt the eyeglass lenses market with meta-optics,”
Joeressen stated, emphasizing the potential to improve life quality for individuals with high dioptre prescriptions.
CEO Bo Svarrer Hansen acknowledged the importance of this financial support.
“This funding marks a significant milestone for ABH Optics. We are thrilled to have the support of HTGF as we strive to bring our innovative lenses to the market,”
Hansen commented. The company’s commitment to sustainability is also a key component of their innovation strategy.
Technological Advancements
Founded by Anders Kristensen, Bo Svarrer Hansen, and Henrik Bense-Petersen in 2022, ABH Optics focuses on groundbreaking meta-optic technology. Leveraging an exclusive IP license from DTU and research fund support, the company aims to redefine lens manufacturing. ABH Optics’ lenses, designed for optical power and structural defect customization, are ultra-thin, lightweight, and environmentally friendly.
ABH Optics targets the 13% of eyeglass wearers with prescriptions over +/- 4 diopters, offering lenses less than 2 mm thick even up to +/-20 diopters. Their novel approach contrasts with traditional lens manufacturing, which typically results in thicker, bulkier lenses for high prescriptions.
High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) is known for supporting high-potential tech startups. Since 2005, it has backed over 750 startups with a focus on digital tech, industrial tech, life sciences, and chemistry. HTGF’s extensive experience and financial backing, including over €6B in follow-on financing, provide a robust foundation for ABH Optics’ future growth.
ABH Optics’ collaboration with HTGF exemplifies how strategic investments can fuel technological advancements. The company’s environmentally conscious production and the practical benefits of its lightweight lenses offer a promising outlook for eyeglass wearers with high prescriptions. This funding not only supports the development of innovative products but also aligns with broader sustainability goals, setting a new standard in the eyeglass lens market.
