Mercedes-Benz is advancing its commitment to sustainability by expanding its partnership with Norwegian aluminum and renewable energy company Hydro. The collaboration aims to enhance the aluminum supply chain for Mercedes-Benz’s forthcoming series of large electric vehicles. This initiative is marked by the automaker’s decision to incorporate Hydro’s recycled aluminum, Hydro CIRCAL, setting a new standard for environmental responsibility in Europe’s automotive production. This proactive step not only exemplifies their dedication to innovative manufacturing practices but also signals a shift towards more sustainable resource usage in the industry.

Mercedes-Benz previously spearheaded several initiatives to incorporate environmentally friendly materials into its vehicles. The continued partnership with Hydro accentuates their pursuit of reducing carbon emissions within the aluminum value chain. Notably, earlier efforts involved the implementation of Hydro REDUXA, a CO₂-reduced primary aluminum created using renewable energy-powered electrolysis. By combining both recycled and primary aluminum, they are working towards achieving a sustainable automotive material ecosystem.

What Does the Partnership Entail?

Under the agreement, Mercedes-Benz adopts Hydro CIRCAL, which consists of at least 75% post-consumer recycled aluminum. This recycled content exceeds the approximate 25% used in currently supplied materials, signifying a substantial leap toward reducing reliance on newly sourced raw materials. The recycling processes retrieve aluminum from outdated vehicles, buildings, and infrastructure, ensuring its reuse in vehicle production.

How Does the Partnership Affect Sustainability Goals?

This collaboration aligns with Mercedes-Benz’s overarching sustainability goals. The automaker is committed to reducing CO₂ emissions from production by 80% by 2030 and aims for carbon-neutral production materials across its automotive divisions by 2039. The partnership is emblematic of their strategy to create strategic, environmentally beneficial alliances throughout their supply chain.

The partnership was initially established with a letter of intent in 2022 outlining a low-carbon technology roadmap through 2030. Following its expansion in 2024, the joint venture now covers the aluminum value chain, from raw to finished materials, indicating a deeper engagement in long-term decarbonization strategies.

“By combining recycled aluminum Hydro CIRCAL with CO₂-reduced primary aluminum Hydro REDUXA, we can accelerate the transition to lower-carbon vehicles while building more resilient value chains,” noted Eivind Kallevik, President and CEO of Hydro.

Yanni von Roy-Jiang, Head of Purchasing & Supplier Management at Mercedes-Benz AG, emphasized, “Together with Hydro, we are shaping this future. We are demonstrating that resilient supply chains and lower emissions go hand in hand.”

The Mercedes-Benz and Hydro partnership not only aims to decarbonize but also fosters resilience and transparency within their supply chains. As sustainable practices become a focal point, reducing dependency on new, raw materials is pivotal for environmental accountability. By focusing on circular economy practices, they are poised to offer competitive yet eco-friendly product lines. Moving forward, such initiatives could potentially set industry benchmarks for sustainable auto manufacturing. Investing in recycling not only reduces carbon emissions but also ensures long-term profitability and social responsibility.
