In a strategic development, Saltroad, a leading provider in speech and language therapy, has announced a £1.5 million funding round along with the acquisition of Ogma, an AI documentation platform. With this move, Saltroad strengthens its mission to address the increasing demand for speech and language services in the UK, where current systems struggle to meet the needs. The lack of available therapy services leaves families and therapists with limited options, often resulting in extended waiting times and administrative burdens.

Why Acquire Ogma? How Will This Affect Children’s Access to Therapy?

In the past, efforts to address the speech and language therapy needs in the UK focused on traditional methods, often resulting in long waiting lists. With approximately two million children needing support, past reliance on pre-existing systems placed a significant strain on families and therapists alike. Saltroad’s innovative approach is set to alleviate these issues by offering private access to NHS therapists and incorporating AI-driven solutions to streamline processes and enhance efficiency for patients and providers.

Why Acquire Ogma?

Saltroad’s recent acquisition of Ogma, an AI-based platform, is a move towards refining the documentation process. Using AI, the company aims to convert therapy session data into structured notes, reducing after-hours administrative tasks. The integration is projected to standardize the quality of records across more than 1,000 therapists, offering them more time to focus on clinical duties.

How Will This Affect Children’s Access to Therapy?

This acquisition promises to significantly improve children’s access to speech therapy services by making the network more efficient without losing clinical quality. The streamlined documentation process is anticipated to allow therapists to see more patients, addressing the unmet demand while maintaining high standards of care. Saltroad’s model also offers parents wider access to specialists, bypassing traditional lengthy waiting lists.

Darren Lester, co-founder and CEO of Saltroad, highlights the system’s weaknesses.

“That isn’t a failure of effort from therapists – it’s a system that was never built for the scale or variety of need it now faces. Saltroad exists to put the therapy back into speech and language therapy, and to reach the families the current systems can’t.”

The introduction of AI allows the focus to remain on patient care rather than administrative workloads.

By incorporating AI tools, the company aims to balance clinical effectiveness with therapist wellbeing. The AI-supported strategy presents a scalable solution, according to Audrey Osborne, Partner at Techstart Ventures.

“The combination of a scalable therapist workforce and purpose-built AI is exactly the kind of ambition we want to support in Northern Ireland.”

This perspective underscores the potential impact of AI on regional healthcare solutions.

The funding and acquisition reinforce Saltroad’s aim to construct a flexible, AI-enabled workforce that advances patient care. The combination of purpose-built tools within this model ensures that therapists can dedicate more time to direct patient interaction, reducing the strain from extensive administrative duties.

Saltroad’s integration of AI with expert clinicians is a significant step in addressing the reservations often associated with AI in healthcare, ensuring access is broadened without compromising on quality. The move is perceived as a balanced approach to managing increasing demands in speech therapy services. As the field moves towards AI-enhanced methods, it is critical to maintain a human touch, ensuring that technology supports rather than replaces expert judgment.
