In a significant move highlighting automotive safety concerns, Ford has announced a recall impacting approximately 420,000 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs. The recall addresses a seat belt defect that could result in the seat belts getting locked, potentially leading to passenger injuries during a crash. The affected SUVs span model years 2018 to 2022, raising questions about the safety protocols implemented during their manufacturing. This follows previous recall efforts by Ford aimed at similar defective components.

What is the Technical Fault? How Will Ford Address This Issue?

Ford’s new recall recalls strategies from previous incidents involving their vehicles. The company had earlier encountered recalls linked to seat belt pretensioners in its models, prompting extensive investigations. Back in 2026, Ford had conducted tests following two previous seat belt recalls, emphasizing the recurring challenges faced by automakers in ensuring vehicle safety.

What is the Technical Fault?

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has clarified that the seat belt locking issue stems from the degradation of the propellant in the seat belt retractor pretensioners. This is primarily observed in high-heat conditions that cause oxidation of internal components. Such degradation leads to pretensioners inadvertently deploying, resulting in seat belts being locked in position, which could be hazardous during a crash.

How Will Ford Address This Issue?

To mitigate these risks, Ford plans to notify affected owners by mail and advise them to have their vehicle inspected at a Ford or Lincoln dealership. The inspection will determine whether the retractors need replacement based on suspect production dates. The company aims to ensure safety by replacing defective retractors, preventing any inadvertent pretensioner deployment.

Messaging to vehicle owners will begin with interim notifications sent between June 8 and June 12, followed by comprehensive remedy notifications starting on August 31. Ford emphasizes their commitment to resolving this issue swiftly, ensuring both Expedition and Navigator models adhere to safety standards.

In a statement addressing the recall, Ford assured its customers of their commitment to safety.

“Ford is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of safety for our vehicles,” the company mentioned. This statement underscores the importance Ford places on addressing manufacturing defects promptly.

Despite only one injury being reported globally related to the defect, Ford remains vigilant in ensuring similar incidents do not occur.

“Customer safety and satisfaction are among our top priorities,” the automaker stated. Ford’s structured response aims to preempt potential hazards while maintaining customer trust.

For consumers concerned with vehicle safety, this incident underscores the challenges automakers face in consistently ensuring safety. Ford’s proactive response exemplifies the demands placed on manufacturers to maintain product integrity and consumer trust.
