Historically, Wikipedia has stood as one of the primary online sources for users seeking information. Yet, with Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) introducing its AI Overviews feature, which provides AI-generated summaries atop traditional search results, users are less inclined to click on external links. Only a small fraction of users have reportedly clicked within the AI-generated summaries, suggesting a shifting behavior in digital information consumption. Despite Google’s statement that overall click volume remains stable, Wikipedia and similar platforms reportedly feel the impact.
Why is Wikipedia’s Traffic Declining?
Wikipedia observed a decline in human visits after an initial surge suspected to be the result of sophisticated bots bypassing detection. An improved bot detection system later confirmed the suspected traffic decrease. The foundation noted a similar pattern across platforms like YouTube and Reddit, which are also integrated into AI content summarization.
How is Wikipedia Adapting to A.I. Developments?
While Wikipedia embraces AI to some extent, using it to aid editors with content management and translations, it also recognizes the challenges AI poses. The foundation is working on attributing online content more effectively and making editorial tasks accessible across various devices. Despite the dip in visits, Wikipedia’s popularity as a data source for training large language models remains.
