Safe Superintelligence (SSI), a startup co-founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, has secured a $2 billion investment round, valuing the company at $30 billion. This funding comes despite the company not having a commercial product or a clear roadmap for release. SSI’s primary focus is on developing superintelligence, a form of artificial intelligence that surpasses human capabilities. The startup distinguishes itself from competitors by prioritizing research over immediate commercialization. Investors appear to be betting on Sutskever’s reputation in the AI sector rather than a concrete business model.

Who is backing SSI’s ambitious project? What makes SSI different from other AI startups?

Previous reports on SSI’s funding efforts indicated growing investor interest in AI ventures despite the lack of tangible products. A few months ago, the company was valued at a fraction of its current worth, highlighting the rapid increase in its market perception. Compared to similar AI startups, the speed at which SSI has attracted capital is notable, even in an industry known for speculative investments. This trend reflects investor confidence in AI research teams with experienced leadership, even in the absence of a tested product.

Who is backing SSI’s ambitious project?

SSI has secured funding from major venture capital firms, including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and Greenoaks Capital, the latter leading the latest investment round. The backing of these firms suggests strong confidence in the startup’s long-term vision. However, the absence of a clear product offering raises questions about the criteria investors are using to justify such a high valuation. Sutskever’s track record, particularly his role in the development of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is likely a key factor driving interest in the project.

What makes SSI different from other AI startups?

Unlike other AI firms focusing on commercial applications, SSI is committed to developing superintelligence with an emphasis on safety. The company operates with a level of secrecy uncommon in the industry. Job applicants must place their phones in Faraday cages before entering offices, and employees have been advised not to list the company on their LinkedIn profiles. SSI’s approach to AI development, free from commercial pressure, is seen as a defining characteristic, differentiating it from competitors who prioritize rolling out AI-powered products.

Sutskever’s departure from OpenAI followed his involvement in an unsuccessful attempt to remove CEO Sam Altman. His exit and subsequent formation of SSI with former OpenAI staffer Daniel Levy and investor Daniel Gross indicate a continuation of his AI research goals separate from OpenAI’s trajectory. While OpenAI continues to refine ChatGPT and other AI models, SSI is dedicating its efforts solely to the advancement of AI beyond human-level intelligence.

Superintelligence is considered by researchers to be significantly more powerful than artificial general intelligence (AGI). During a panel discussion in 2023, Sutskever described the potential impact of this technology:

“Without question it’s going to be unbelievably powerful. If it is used well, if we navigate the challenges that superintelligence poses, we could radically improve the quality of life.”

However, the uncertainty surrounding how to achieve such advancements responsibly remains a major challenge in AI development.

SSI’s valuation and investor confidence highlight a broader trend in AI funding, where expertise and vision often outweigh immediate commercial viability. While the company’s secrecy ensures limited insight into its progress, the interest from major venture capital firms suggests that many see potential in its approach. Whether SSI can deliver on its promise remains uncertain, but its focus on AI safety and long-term research aligns with concerns about the risks of advanced AI. The coming years will reveal whether its strategy leads to meaningful breakthroughs or if investor enthusiasm outpaces technological feasibility.
