Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has broadened its services for independent sellers using Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) in the United States by introducing a new option for handling product returns: the Grade and Resell program. This initiative aims to aid sellers in recuperating value from returned items and extend the variety of available products for consumers. Besides the commercial aspect, the program addresses environmental concerns by promoting the resale of preowned goods, thus reducing waste.
How Does the Grade and Resell Program Work?
The Grade and Resell program, initially exclusive to retail brands, is now accessible to independent sellers. Within this framework, returned items are evaluated at Amazon’s return centers to determine their resale potential. The process involves a comprehensive inspection to assess the condition of the items. Gopal Pillai, Amazon’s vice president of worldwide returns and reCommerce, explained,
“Before an item can be sold through Grade and Resell, we conduct a comprehensive inspection to thoroughly test the condition of each item and provide a detailed description of its condition to make it easier for customers to make a more informed purchase decision.”
Will the Program Benefit Sellers and Buyers?
Indeed, the program benefits both sellers and buyers by offering a wider selection of preowned and open-box items at competitive prices. Electronic items undergo additional tests like powering on and factory-resetting to ensure functionality. This meticulous process aids buyers in making informed decisions, fostering consumer trust. Each item is categorized into ‘Like New,’ ‘Very Good,’ ‘Good,’ or ‘Acceptable’ based on its condition, facilitating transparency in the transaction.
Amazon has also implemented other options for FBA sellers, including Product Support for hassle-free product setup, FBA Returnless Resolutions allowing refunds without physical returns, and FBA Donations letting sellers donate eligible products.

Their report revealed that nearly half of online shoppers prioritize seamless return processes.
